Obaid Siddiqi (trained by Pontecorvo & Benzer) started behavioral and neurophysiological studies in 1962 at the Tata Institute of Fundamental Research, Mumbai. Fly labs started at Punjab University in early 1960s (GP Sharma, later Ram Prashad, trained in MR Wheeler’s lab), Punjab Agriculture University, Ludhiana (RD Narda, Ram Parshad’s student) in 1969 and at Haryana Agricultural University, Hissar by Poulson’s student KS Gill in 1970. MR Rajasekarasetty, Dobzhansky’s student, started at Mysore University in 1960 (later NB Krishnamurthy, HA Ranganath). Ray-Chaudhuri moved to Banaras Hindu University in 1960 and started a fly lab (continued by JP Gupta, SC Lakhotia, BN Singh). SP Ray-Chaudhuri, Muller’s student, started fly lab at Calcutta University, with active help from JBS Haldane, in early 1950s (later AS Mukherjee, Curt Stern’s student).
